In the northern part of the great ocean, there is about 44 million pounds of plastic floating just below the water surface in a large ring. This is called "the plastic soup". This size is comparable to the size of France and Spain together. It is said there are five of such polluted places in the oceans. The plastic soup does not only contain large plastic parts, but also contains particles of 5 mm or less.
Frans de Waard, initiator of Saraswater, came up with the idea of a cleaning unit to retrieve all this plastic from the ocean.
Main characteristics of this unit are:
- high energy efficiency
- has no ecologic impact
- designed to retrieve small parts also
- easy to produce
The Saraswater Foundation is established to develop the cleaning unit.
